FTP Tutorials

Should you prefer to up-load to and maintain your Domain Name Server with a FTP program, you might want to consult this tutorial on how to properly publish your web pages from your computer to your web server.

With FTP - as with FrontPage - you have instant access to your web sites hosted on our Domain Name servers. When you establish an account with us, we'll supply you with the necessary UserID, Password and FTP Name. This information is required by the FTP software.

In the screen shots below, we illustrate the process of configuring one of the most popular FTP interfaces. We highly recommend a program that can be easily downloaded for free in its "light" edition: "WS_FTP" for PC users. (Mac users can use Fetch).

The example below uses WS_FTP for illustration purposes.

All you need to do is enter the information we supply you where the program asks for it. You can also create a new Profile Name with the "New" button and save it so that for future uses you only need to select your new profile and all information will be filled in for you by the program. You might also consider saving your password or "Auto Save" your entire configuration. (The fields left in blank in this example do not need to be filled in as they are optional.)

Note: Make sure you always select as your Host Type: UNIX (standard)

Once the connection with your server has been established, a screen similar to the one shown below will appear. On the left side (Local System) appear your local computer files and directories and on the right side (Remote System) those located on our server.

You transfer your local files directly to the server by highlighting your local files and then pushing this arrow "->". This will automatically up-load the selected files to the selected remote directory. To download from your server you reverse this process except that you now push the "<-" arrow located in the center field of the screen.

You can also delete and/or view files, make/delete and change directories so as to best fit your needs. Since our servers run on UNIX, please make sure that your home page is always entitled:

index.html

and always with lower case letters, as all your other files should be. For more details on the 8.3 naming convention just click here.

Make sure that you set the radio button to "ASCII" for transferring documents and scripts, and to the "Binary" button for images.

Mac users can use "Fetch" to upload their files to our servers and might select the "raw data" transfer mode for both htm and images. PageMill users may have to watch out for ".bin" and ".txt" files which will not work on our servers.
